Chapter Ten

They rose late the next day and ate in their room. Ania itched to see her brother again, so much that she used the hotel phone to talk to him. He told her he was fine, that Jack was great, if a little angry, and the guy was a complete research freak. Ania heard with some incredulity that Jack had been an archivist before being recruited by STORM. Anyone less like a librarian she couldn’t imagine, but she knew herself guilty of typecasting and absorbed the fact that Andros was dealing with this a lot better than she was.

At noon several beefy bellboys wheeled racks of clothes into the large living room in the suite, followed by boxes of lingerie. With a little encouragement from her lover, Ania lost herself in pleasure for the rest of the afternoon, but guiltily insisted that the most expensive items went back. Chase had made the mistake of leaving price tags on some of the items. Some items didn’t have price tags but bore labels she knew she could never afford. But when she’d sorted through the delectable racks and tried a few of the more irresistible things on, she found herself left with a poor selection. It would do and her insurance would cover a couple of pairs of jeans, t-shirts, some of the plainer underwear and one good dress, because her mother had always insisted that one good dress was worth a dozen cheap ones. She put the other racks aside, ready for the staff to collect.

Johann claimed she looked tired. He took her into the bedroom and distracted her beautifully before leaving to meet with Chase and Jack. Relishing the crisp sheets, changed while they were in the bathroom that morning, Ania slid into sleep.

Only to discover that when she awoke, the small selection of plainer clothes had gone and only the most extravagant, filmy underwear remained and the clothes with labels but no price tags.

If she wanted to dress she had no choice, and deep inside a secret part of her rejoiced in the soft, silky feel of the garments, the way the jeans and t-shirt fit her so well, and when she turned to view her back in the mirror, the way the jeans clung to her butt, outlining every curve.

She found a brush and swept it through her hair. If only she could tame the frizz, she’d look pretty good.

She didn’t turn when the door opened, but watched the mirror as Johann entered the room and closed the door quietly behind him. He leaned against it, and met her gaze. “Beautiful. Good enough to eat.” A wicked gleam lit his dark eyes. “Again.”

Mortified, she watched the flush mantle her cheeks. “You have to take these clothes back. I can’t afford them.”

He pushed away from the door. “I can.” He crossed the room to her and took the brush from her unresisting hand. He smoothed her hair with one hand while he used the brush, flattening the frizz a little.
